The Forbidden Corner

Unusual attractions in Yorkshire

The Forbidden Corner in Leyburn, England, is one of the most unusual and fascinating attractions in Great Britain, located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. This unique garden, spanning four acres, is a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies, and surprises that transports visitors of all ages into a world full of fantasy and adventure. Originally created in the late 1980s as a private project by Colin Armstrong, the owner of Tupgill Park Estate, and architect Malcolm Tempest, the park opened its doors to the public in 1994. What started as a small idea – an observation tower in the midst of a group of trees – quickly grew into an extraordinary experiential destination, earning the title of best European folly of the 20th century by the Folly Fellowship in 1998.

Family-friendly destinations in England

The appeal of The Forbidden Corner lies in its unpredictable and quirky design. Visitors enter the park without a set route and find themselves in a network of winding paths that lead both upwards and downwards. Highlights include the "Temple of the Underworld," an underground space with a mystical atmosphere, and the "Eye of the Needle," a narrow passage that requires courage. A huge pyramid made of translucent glass rises above the grounds, while statues of mythical creatures, knights, and grotesque figures lurk around every corner. Water fountains spray unexpectedly, doors lead to nowhere, and rooms surprise with hidden mechanisms – all of this makes the park an interactive adventure that challenges and entertains both children and adults alike.

Interactive adventures for kids and adults

The landscape surrounding the garden is characterized by the natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, with gentle hills and lush greenery providing a stark contrast to the bizarre structures. Within the walled garden, there are also quieter areas such as herb beds and the "Fish Temple," offering a brief respite. The park is laid out for exploration on foot, with the many stairs, narrow passages, and uneven paths requiring a certain level of physical agility. For families with young children or individuals with limited mobility, access to some areas may be challenging, but most visitors find the effort worthwhile as every corner holds a new surprise.

The Forbidden Corner is not only a place of enjoyment but also a testament to human creativity. Without ever applying for a building permit, the project grew organically, giving it a rebellious touch. Today, it is a family-friendly destination that becomes even more diverse through seasonal events such as an Easter dragon egg hunt, a spooky Halloween event, or visits with Santa in winter. An on-site café serves simple meals and drinks, while a shop offers thematic souvenirs that remind visitors of the park's quirky world. There are also picnic areas that allow visitors to enjoy the day in peace.

Experiences in Yorkshire Dales garden

The atmosphere of the park is often described as a mix of Alice in Wonderland and a medieval fairy tale. Some areas may be slightly eerie for young children – such as the dark tunnels or suddenly appearing gargoyles – but these elements are precisely what make the park appealing to older children and adults. Visitors are encouraged to explore on their own, without predefined paths or maps, enhancing the feeling of discovery and adventure. The park is especially known for its attention to detail: Every statue, gate, and hidden mechanism has been designed with humor and imagination.

The area this is set in is stunningly beautiful, and The Forbidden Corner itself is fantastically weird! Lots of trails and corridors to follow, lots of areas to explore, and the cafe and gift shop was fantastic! Well worth bracing the cold and driving out of the way to experience!

The Forbidden Corner in Yorkshire is easily one of the most interesting places I've ever been to! A truly unique experience, filled with tunnels, mazes, hidden pathways, and fascinating history around every corner. The views are absolutely breathtaking, and the water tricks add a magical element to the visit (though be warned, they can leave you soaked, especially in winter when it gets very cold!). It’s definitely a place to keep an eye on the kids, as it’s easy to get lost in the maze-like sections. The extra money spent on the Santa experience was well worth it – a lovely walk to Santa's cabin, complete with a sleigh outside, and staff who were incredibly enthusiastic and welcoming. This is an experience I'd recommend to anyone looking for something different and memorable. Just be mindful that it’s not suitable for the claustrophobic or those unsteady on their feet.

Such a unique attraction! Kids loved it. Not sure if we managed to see everything so reason to return. Would advise that some of the passageways and staircases are incredibly tight. Especially with a toddler on your back.

We were here two years ago - what an amazing place. The whole family is longing to come back, despite that it was raining throughout our visit.

Visited today for the first time in probably 20 years or so. Staff were all so friendly and welcoming. We had a great day out and had a lot of laughs. The place wasn’t too busy with it being winter and so no areas were overcrowded. Would definitely recommend visiting. There is so much for kids to do and explore you could easily spend a full day here.

Excellent place to visit. Something to appeal to all ages. Spend as long as you want walking around. Lovely food in the cafe. The only downside is the journey there, which is across a long stretch of open moorland. Lovely in summer, I am sure, not so nice in winter. But the Lovely staff gave us an alternative route home, which, although longer, was a little easier. Will definitely go again

Utterly amazing. I was a little worried this place would be just for kids, but myself and my adult sister has a fabulous time. It's is well built, interesting, fun and with a surprisingly interesting history I would certainly recommend for adults, though it wouldn't be suitable for those with disabilities due to rough terrain and narrow passages

What a great hidden gem. Not just another attraction for the little ones. Kids loved it and the adults as well. Definitely recommended if you want to try something different and have a good time. We want to go again and try one of the cottages.
